چکیده

In this issue of Neuron, Tani et al. (2014) revisit a disputed issue where biochemical and physiological data have provided conflicting results. Using a novel stimulation protocol, the authors isolate the contribution of the glutamate-glutamine cycle to excitatory synaptic transmission.

Advantages of multilocus sequence analysis for taxonomic studies: a case study using 10 housekeeping genes in the genus Ensifer (including former Sinorhizobium).

There is a need for easy, practical, reliable and robust techniques for the identification and classification of bacterial isolates to the species level as alternatives to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and DNA-DNA hybridization. Here, we demonstrate that multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of housekeeping genes is a valuable alternative technique. An MLSA study of 10 housekeeping genes (atpD,...

Using Ribosomal Protein Genes as Reference: A Tale of Caution

BACKGROUND Housekeeping genes are needed in every tissue as their expression is required for survival, integrity or duplication of every cell. Housekeeping genes commonly have been used as reference genes to normalize gene expression data, the underlying assumption being that they are expressed in every cell type at approximately the same level. Often, the terms "reference genes" and "housekeep...

Is Good Housekeeping the Key to Motor Neuron Survival?

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by a drastic reduction in the ubiquitously expressed SMN protein, which is critical for the correct assembly of the snRNP complexes required for RNA splicing. However, it is unclear why loss of SMN and altered snRNP assembly only seem to affect motor neurons. Reporting in this issue, Zhang et al. (2008) challenge prior assumptions about the housekeeping f...

Repetitive sequence environment distinguishes housekeeping genes.

Housekeeping genes are expressed across a wide variety of tissues. Since repetitive sequences have been reported to influence the expression of individual genes, we employed a novel approach to determine whether housekeeping genes can be distinguished from tissue-specific genes by their repetitive sequence context. We show that Alu elements are more highly concentrated around housekeeping genes...

THE HOUSEWIFE’S BATTLE ON THE HOME FRONT: WOMEN IN WORLD WAR II ADVERTISEMENTS By Caroline Cornell A 1944 advertisement for Swift’s Beef in Good Housekeeping boldly

A 1944 advertisement for Swift’s Beef in Good Housekeeping boldly proclaimed, “Her SEVEN jobs all help win the war!”1 The seven “jobs” were tasks that the Swift Company—as well as the U.S. government— believed that women on the home front should perform in order to aid their country during World War II. Among the tasks promoted by the advertisement were rationing, the growing of “victory garden...

Mammalian housekeeping genes evolve more slowly than tissue-specific genes.

Do housekeeping genes, which are turned on most of the time in almost every tissue, evolve more slowly than genes that are turned on only at specific developmental times or tissues? Recent large-scale gene expression studies enable us to have a better definition of housekeeping genes and to address the above question in detail. In this study, we examined 1581 human-mouse orthologous gene pairs ...
